صدرت في العام 1857، لمؤلفها الإنكليزي روبرت مايكل بالانتاين (1825-1894)، وهي بذلك تقع بين عوالم روايات: (روبنسن كروزو 1719)، و(عائلة روبنسون السويسرية 1812)، و(جزيرة الكنز 1883). وهي تنتمي إلى ما يسمى مغامرة مَن تقطّعت بهم السبل (Castaway Adventure). وسوف يرى القارئ المطلع الصلةَ الواضحة بين هذه الرواية وما تلاها من صدور جزيرة الكنز، ذلك في بعض المواضع، ومنها: مشهد استراق السمع الشهير، والبقاء مع قرصان وحيد على السفينة. وكذلك الصلة الكبيرة بما صدر بعدها بسنوات كثيرة، برواية (أمير الذباب 1954)، وفيها محاولة الكاتب ويليام غولدنغ، للتركيز في الجانب الروحي، وتحديد منابع الشر الداخلي، بعيداً عن الأجواء التقليدية المعتادة لرواية جزيرة المرجان، ولكن من جهة أخرى هنالك صلات كثيرة أخرى بين الروايتين لن تخفى عن القارئ، ويحرص بالانتاين على تفصيل مشاهداته في عادات الشعوب، ومنها: الوشم، ورياضات ركوب الأمواج. كل ذلك يجعل الفتيان في حالة متكاملة من العناية بالعلم، وتعزيز الروح المؤمنة الشجاعة، ونمو الشخصية ونضجها بشكل تدريجي سليم. -
